Thirteen more human embryonic stem cell lines were approved by the Obama administration for research .Scientist are predicting major breakthroughs with these new lines . You know, I've debated Christian fundamentalist on this issue . What it always seems to boil down to is their irrational fears regarding their belief system vs progressives rational fears if this research isn't allowed to flourish .Let me bring up some of these irrational fears expressed by the christian right . (1) "Your taking a life to save another" . Scientifically speaking, that's a load of crap . An embryo has no brain, central nervous system, mouth, heart, lungs, or other internal organs. It has no organs to see, hear, touch, taste; it lacks a body, head, arms, legs; it has no self awareness, memory, thought processes, or consciousness . In addition these embryonic stem cells will be discarded or die .Also, Millions of men, women, and children's lives could be saved from embryonic stem cell research . (2) " We have adult stem cells so we don't need embryonic stem cells" . Adult stem cell research is promising .However, they are limited in the variety of cell types that they can become. In other words one adult stem cell shoe size doesn't fit all . (3) "Embryonic research has had no results" . This is false .Clinical trials on humans with spinal cord injuries are about to begin thanks to restrictions lifted by the Obama administration . The possibilities are endless . Cancer, diabetes, spinal injury cures .All the way to stem cell regenerative research .This could lead to humans being able to grow new lungs, hearts, arms, etc. when yours gives out or is lost in a accident . In addition, other countries are already doing embryonic stem cell research . So all that the fundamentalist are doing is letting other countries get a jump on the U.S. in terms of being the first and best when it comes to this promising research .
this is very interesting! keep on posting..

Sam Harris is absolutely right on this. If we let men like him decide what is/isn't acceptable in the name of scientific research then we certainly won't progress as much or as fast as we could. Also, if it were up to people like him we won't ever know precisely how our universe began. A satisfactory answer for him would be to say "God did it!". Which is nothing more than a cop out and an insult to the scientific method.

"We need theology, we need philosophy, we need faith?"
Theology, erhm.. no we don't NEED it. It could help us understand why people believe what they do though but it is not necessary and will likely not count for much in the future
.
Philosophy.. It has a scientific part to it and adheres to logical arguments and we need that yes. It also helps you develop your consciousness.
Faith.. Sorry to disappoint you but we don't ALL need it. Some people do, like you.
You could argue that I have
