Guqin - Pingsha Luoyan 《平沙落鴈》[Geese Descending on the Beach]

Pingsha Luoyan 《平沙落鴈》 [Wild Geese Descending on the Sandy Beach] is a popular qin melody originating from the Ming dynasty. There are over 45 versions, each similar yet different from one another.

The piece is about the descending of wild geese on a sandbank (as the name of the piece suggests). Wild geese is a symbol of nostalgia and longing because in ancient times, wild geese were used to carry messages to friends that were far away and you couldn't meet them.

The version I now play is the Guangling School version from the Jiao'an Qinpu 【蕉庵琴譜】 (1868). The Guangling School is located in the southern part of China where the climate is warm and temperate, thus, the version of this piece is very relaxing and calm, unlike the Jiuyi School version, which is more dramatic.

Home-made subfusc?

Actually, subfusc refers to the dark jacket and white tie. The actual hood was designed and made by myself (recently re-sewn); it is now since been assigned as the hood of a Fellow of the Society in which I founded but last year.
