The clips used in this video come from a BBC documentary. If you want to know more about the Powell and the speech then Part 1 of the documentary is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP7fETsKYkA
(and yes, I did copy the opening due to poor audio quality)

As ever, it is likely that my message will be misconstrued or misinterpreted (whether deliberately or not).

In order to avoid unnecessary comments let me try and explain my position.

I have great regard and respect for Enoch Powell.

He was an intellectual giant and a brilliant orator.

I do not believe that he was a racist.

I believe that he was right to raise the issue.

I think that the manner in which he did raise the issue was deliberately provocative. It undoubtedly caused an increase in tension and, as one of those in the clips said, "it was a call to arms".

I failed to understand what Willett was saying or was trying to say.

The tone of his video suggested to me, (in the absence of evidence to the contrary), that Willett is harbouring racial bigotry and is seeking, as others have done, some form of intellectual support and credence from Powell's speech. If so, they fail. Powell's "predictions" (as contained in the speech) are only accurate in so far as the prediction of the number of immigrants is concerned. The idea that the country is flowing with blood is risible.

Despite my regard for Powell it would be disingenuous for me to try and pretend that any "prediction" in the Rivers of Blood speech was correct. It wasn't, save for the one mentioned in the video.

In short, however brilliant Powell may have been, you can not canonise him. In his Rivers of Blood speech he was wrong.

It is disgusting to me that there are those who may seek to monopolise on, or seek credence from this speech. To do so is dishonesty parallel to the creationists who claim that the bible foretold scientific knowledge.

The video to which I am responding appears to have been removed by Willetts.

  • i pesonaly dont care about race if 99% of british people are black or asian in 50 years i dont care that is merely an asthetic choice, however islam is poison to the minds of all humankind and must be destroyed

  • @LeksServices do you understand the concept of a club? a club has the right to discriminate for any reason, they can say you can't join because of skin color, or sexual preference. a church is a club, sharia courts are clubs, jewish courts are clubs. get over the idea that muslims are bad but jews aren't, they are equal.

  • For Goodness sake............... take it back

  • I find it amusing that the whites voicing concern over immigration are probably the same people who buy into the old "white man's burden," and were more than ok with the British Empire dominance over them. As long as they weren't living next door.

  • a line that stood out to me "This racial issue is a matter of national impotence!"

    ...forget an R there, dude?

  • 3. Bottomline:

There is almost always reason for hate, but often its caused by irelevant things

All pointless rasists with arguments like:"ni***rs should not have rights and work in fields" should go to jail, but if some 70 years old grandma(which is surely not nazi) say:"i dont like blacks because they steal" there is really a reason why she thinks that.

Rasism should be punished on all sides the same.

Also rasism should be forbiden because it causes problems, but not ALL of the problems

  • 2. Thats why i dont think that rasism, should really be "banned", i dont think that anyone who say: "i dont like immigrants" should go to jail, but i also think that rasism shouldnt be tolerated, and people who spread the hate should go to jail. Rasism should be taken as "sign" that there is something wrong with country. Islamophobia is not caused by nationalists, but by rise of criminality and fear of radical islam.

  • 1. DprJones, I really like all your Videos but i need to disagree with you, as well as with Willet.

The rasism is not cause of different immigration problems, the rasism is result of immigration problems. There is really just a small amout of people that hate some country, race, religion, or group of people for no reason. Try ask any racist why do they hate black people and none of them will say:"well because they are black", but somethime like:"They rise criminality and they are agressive"

  • @MobileThinker

The only answer probably still is a good education.

  • @MobileThinker

Just like pumping blood is what the heart does, you are what your brain does. So naturally anything you are has a representation of sorts in your brain. Just like altering the representations in the brain has an effect on what it does: you. It's one and the same.

While certain predispositions may make individuals vulnerable to delusions, I doubt it's something a simple education won't cure. And 'curing' these predispositions won't take away the learned delusions either.

  • @CrimsonRefractions i will grant you that some delusions are easier to break. also, neuroscience has taken a large leap in the whole, "is religion a brain disorder" thing. i know that with higher dopamine levels you are more likely to accept religious claims, just like you are more likely to see patterns that aren't really there. from what i understand religion may in fact be directly related to brain chemistry, which means we can "cure" it.

  • @MobileThinker

Still, one can escape from one delusion easier than one can escape from the other, as such I would rate them slightly different.

But yes, it's all the same type of delusion, and it all needs to go. Perhaps psychologists can have a role here, after all they once thought homosexuality was a disorder. Now there actually is a disorder that is widespread and curable, but they remain silent.
