@elfhermie You are so right. I use a "Lag Master" to overcome this problem. The "Lag Master" lets you know how far your ball will roll on the particular green you will be playing on (with a one-foot-long backstroke). It's really amazing how accurate you can become with your distance control.

Too bad so many normal public courses have greens of varying speeds. You can practice this on the practice greens and nail it, but then when you go out onto the course it doesn't provide the same results. Sometimes your 3 foot practice putt on the green turns into a 6 foot putt on the real course and/or a 2 foot putt depending on how worn out the greens are or aren't. It can really tick a guy off.

Hank. The big problem in controlling distance and direction is that the golfer is focusing on the ball, not on the target during the stroke. You are asking golfers to "imagine" how far the putt is while staring at the ball. You wouldn't shoot a basketball that way. A better way to putt is to face the hole and focus on the hole. Click my link below to see how to do that.

Important point. Speed (distance) not direction all the time. This is your thought before putting.
