This video is a part of an exercise for DST 501 Rethinking Disability. The exercise is called Hidden City. In groups, we were given neighbourhoods to explore and try to find things that disable people with impairments. We could report on our findings in whatever method we wished. I chose to record video on my ipod.
This is one of the videos I took, as we walked down the street and through an elementary schoolyard. Things we noticed was a lot of steps, plus play equipment (children using wheelchairs) and picnic tables (adults and children using wheelchairs) that are not wheelchair accessible. Also, the pavement was uneven, which could be a difficulty for people with other physical impairments.
I noticed bleachers were exclusive for wheelchair users. Something I've also noticed as I went back and watched the videos was how narrow the sidewalks where, which could be a hazard for wheelchair users and people with social anxiety issues, especially on garbage day.
In accordance with full accessibility and inclusion, I will be going through and transcribing the conversation as best I can. I find the auto-captioning to be very faulty, so I will do transcripts until I figure out how to do captioning.
