Marcel Journet Die Walküre - Leb' wohl, Du kühnes, herrliches Kind
Woton, final scene

Marcel Journet (July 25, 1867 – September 7, 1933), was a French bass. He enjoyed a prominent career in European and American opera houses in New York City and Chicago.
Journet was born in Grasse, southern France, and reputedly studied at the Paris conservatory. He made his debut at Montpellier in 1891. He went on to sing a wide range of roles in operas by Richard Wagner and various French and Italian composers during a distinguished, 40-year career.
The Royal Opera House at London's Covent Garden, La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera and the New York Metropolitan Opera, were some of the famous venues graced by Journet's presence. Arturo Toscanini was just one of the celebrated conductors under whose baton he performed. Among singers, his great contemporaries included Nellie Melba, Luisa Tetrazzini, Enrico Caruso, Titta Ruffo and Feodor Chaliapin.
Journet died in Vittel, of a heart attack. He had a beautiful, cultured voice and a fine technique, hitting the absolute peak of his powers as a singer and actor during the early 1920s. Recordings confirm Journet's excellence as a singer. Many of these have been re-issued on CD.

  • Though not in German, I've always thought Journet's "Farewell" one of the finest on record. Such a beautiful, well-used voice and heartfelt interpretation.

Keep in mind, too, that he was between 58 and 66 when he sang this. Not sure when exactly this was recorded, but electrical recording began in 1925 and Journet lived (and as far as I know, kept singing) for another eight years --

  • What a gorgeous recording, thank you so much for posting these French gems!

  • Accent épouvantable,mais bonne interprétation.

  • @stevevandien Journet recorded this "Farewell" in a studio with rather dry acoustics. A fairly common occurrence during the first few years of electrical recording and concurrent technological limitations. We get Journet's full, free, handsome sound. But less sheer resonance and ring than we would have enjoyed had we heard this great singer in an acoustically excellent theater at this time --

  • Thank you very much!

  • How expressive and beautiful.

    Thank you-John
