Peter Donk's 1/4 scale RC Affordaplane flying at the GVAM club field on 6-13-09. Built from full scale plans from aluminum tubing, 82.5" wingspan, 51.75" length, 16.5 lbs., converted 31cc Ryobi trimmer engine, stock magneto ignition, 16X10 Master Airscrew prop (8100 rpm), Futaba 6EX 2.4GHz radio, 6 S3004 servos (2 aileron, rudder, elevator, throttle, choke), 12 oz. fuel capacity, Sig Koverall fabric covering. This was an extremely fun build over 6 months from Christmas 2008 to June of 2009. The plane flies well as long as you respect it's limitations. Very true-to-life scale performance. No aerobatics, gentle turns and climbs, quick decent on power off, etc. Very proud of my little plane... Video Credit: http://www.rcjohn.com

  • do you still have the plans?

  • @balls2yourface I used the full scale plans and reduced everything to 1/4 scale. Plans are available from the Affordaplane website and are very inexpensive...

  • Wher did you get your motor mount?

  • I fabricated the mount from 2"X3" rectangular aluminum tubing. Cut away excess material and drilled it for the engine bolts and used four bolts to mount it to the front plate on the fuselage...

  • Interesting. However, seems most builders have a hard time getting the full size aircraft to come in under 254 lbs. And, I'm a little skeptical of the design and it gets it's lateral strength from a couple of guy wires but has a huge truss providing vertical strength.

For those reasons I've pretty much written it off as a legitimate ultralight design.

Clearly a legitimate aircraft design, but not sure it's quite on the level as a class legal UL.

  • I agree. I've read many things about it never making the 254 pound limit as well as questions about it's airworthiness. I was still enamored by the design and wanted to build an RC version just the same. I'm quite confident that if built properly with enough power a full scale version would fly but how well I can only speculate. All I know for sure is it's a real hoot to see my model soaring overhead and I do a little vicarious living through it every time it flies... :-)
