I saw Paul Simon play this this past year and he said he wrote it about a soldier in Vietnam who was about to be sent home but then got killed there right before he got to go back and see his mother. What a "strange and mournful day".

Cool! I:ve never heard this. And being such a Randy fan you'd think I would have. Very nice.

I got to meet him and the rest of the band (they had a reunion tour of all the original members) in the early 1980's. What an awesome down to earth guy he was. Rest in peace Randy.

An incredible version of this Paul Simon-classic!
To me Randy does this with great reverence to the original. It's obvious that
it's done with love to both the tune and Paul Simon but at the same time with as much Randy California that almost becomes HIS tune.
To me this is THE ultimate version. Would have been interesting to have heard Simon's opinion of this terriffic cover.
Something that hits me every time I listen to this record is what an amazing and incredibly underrated singer RC was!

Can,t believe that nobody else has commented on this classic yet. Saw Spirit at Lancaster Uni in the late 70,s Absolutely brilliant. Nobody more passionate about their music than Randy. "Spirit of 76" my all time favourite album.

@episkopi08 Well thanks for posting comments. It's appreciated. I love the mans music, Spirit and solo. The first time I saw them was touring the "Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus" album. (One of the best overall albums ever made, IMO.) The last time was New Years Eve '80/'81, as a warm-up for Ten Years After. Also saw them headline with Renaissance in '75, and by themselves at a bar called Dooley's in Tucson, '78. A fresh and great experience every time.

must be 30 years since I last heard this. Brilliant music from a brilliant man.

@episkopi08 Touche`. Randy swallowed a Paul Simon tune and spit out this gem.
