Horse's and ponies are allowed to roam freely on Cockfield Fell along with other livestock. The fell is part of the 'Largest Scheduled Ancient Monument In County Durham' and is 350 acres in size.

The number of horse's are strictly monitored by a village committee, each horse is individually numbered and only certain residents of the village of Cockfield have grazing rights to the fell.

The horse in the water is eating the sweeter grass found there following the harshest winter in thirty years.
