The Red Army Chorus sings "Nad Synom Donom" (The Sons of the Don), matched with paintings of Cossacks by Ilya Repin and Vasili Surikov.

There are some Ukrainian nationalists who say that Cossacks were all Ukrainians and anti-Russian. This is not so. Most Cossacks spoke Russian, and lived in the outlying parts of the Empire. I know this because I am a proud daughter of the Siberian Host. This video is my tribute to my forebears.

  • The Dnieper Cossacks of Ukraine formed the Zaporozhian Sich. Initially allied with Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, increasing social and religious pressure from the Commonwealth caused the Cossacks of Ukraine to proclaim a Hetmanate and to initiate a rebellion under Bohdan Khmelnytsky in the mid-17th century. Afterward, the Treaty of Pereyaslavl with Russia ensured that Poland would never recover from the defeat.

  • My grandather died from Soviet granade on river Don. He was Serbian ,who was enforced to to fight against Russia by Hungarian fascist army of Miclos Horthy .If he didnt do that ,they would probably kill his family in northern part of Serbia , Vojvodina, which was under Hungarian and Croatian tyranny in WW2. He died with his Serbian friend in the same moment they wanted to desert or flee from fascist, and join with Russians and other Orthodox brothers.

  • What a great song. I wanted to dance.

  • Moc pěkné ! 5*****

  • The song is called "Over the blue Don"

  • @SlovenskiPartizan It was not about repressions. During Russian Civil War all nation was divided. Part of Cossacks fought for Red Army, others for White. Lately, when Red Army started to win and push all enemies to the borders of the country, many of them ran away abroad and of course hated Soviet Union and dreamt about restoration of their privilegies. Those groups Nazis used to create anti soviet units. They were not just of cossacks. Vlasov's army included many prisoned soviet people too.

  • @Vostorgina01 OVER THE BLUE DON When we left our native land/And keeping silence went East/Over the blue Don/Under the old maple/Your handkerchief was looming foralongtime//I couldn't hearyour words my dear/But I knew that you will wait forme with sadness/It's not the crimson leaf/But our wounds/that are burning on the river's sands//Dug up by projectiles the steppe was moaning/And the black smoke hung over Stalingrad/And for a long-long time/By the(very)Volga/I've dreamed of Don and youover it

  • NAD SINIM DONOM means "on the dark-blue Done" or "over the dark-blue Don"

  • Too bad the Red Army Choir doesn't have/used woman voiced, it makes for a great mix.

I'm pretty sure that already awesome songs sung by them would be even more awesome if some womans where there to sing along.

  • @Kalinin1917 They're men. Counter tenors.
