Some umbrellas are used as reflectors and the open end faces the subject. Some are used as shoot-thru diffusers and the flash shoots through the umbrella instead.  He is using them perfectly fine.

Really? Typically when one is familiar with the correct way to do something, and one sees someone else doing it incorrectly, facepalming is a perfectly valid reaction, although headdesking would work too. It does not have anything to do with one's life being boring or sad.
