Rain Dance by Alice Gomez and Marilyn Rife, performed by Nathan Hewitt.

Not my best performance, but something I am proud of nonetheless.

SteveWeissMusic:
Rain Dance by Alice Gomez has become a popular choice for beginning marimba players. Simple melodic statements make this work a catchy favorite. Beginning 4 mallet marimba players will enjoy the syncopated rhythms and independent left hand work throughout the piece.

Alice Gomez has gained international recognition for her Latino and Native American influenced compositions. She grew up in San Antonio, Texas, a city rich in cultural diversity, playing the drums in my father's Latin dance band. As a composer, her goal is to create works that capture the true spirit of ethnicity and communicate it in contemporary musical language. In creating new works, she strives to preserve and promote the traditions of her Hispanic culture, as well as those of the many other cultures that she embraces.

  • sticks definitely play role in playing! the harder the mallets (which I presume you had used medium to hard mallets) the more articulate your notes are and the softer the mallets, the better choral sound you'll get

  • @MrRidhard thats Absolutely true, but i was referring more to the fact that you shouldnt choose a specific brand and model of mallet just because someone else used them. Furthermore, i dont even like the mallets that were used in this video haha.

  • Love it. You're stance is really good and the camera used to record is also pretty good. I'm trying to learn this piece for our solo and ensemble and I have two questions. What type of mallets did you use and what key was the music because it sounds different than what I've been playing. But knowing my musical experience I'm probably just playing something wrong.(I'm in 9th grade with 3 years experience)

  • Answer 2: Last time I checked, this was in D minor. But that could have changed somewhere in between my camera and youtube (though I doubt it). Either way, it truly doesn't matter.

    Best of luck.

    Nathan

  • @mystyka13 On my stance: I should stand of straight, and keep my chin up, looking down with my eyes. And I actually used Vic Firth black multiapplication mallets or somethin like that. Again, nothin special.

  • I like this song!

    Very good!

  • At 0:56 I always only considered using the two inner mallets... never even thought of using all of them xD

  • the 6, 8 was hands down my favorite part to play. =) l

  • Hey dude! Pretty good chops. The notes are mostly there, work on better accuracy (esp. with the 1 and 4 mallets). At places like 1:07 your body is making some awkward movements. Realize that you CAN get a great sound on the very edge of the keys so try and experiment with that. You want to keep your body as flush with the instrument as possible. Make sure you're playing exactly what's on the page note and rhythm wise. that you shouldn't mess with. Mess with dynamics and tempos! Keep it up man!

  • This is like the easiest peice ive ever played!

  • every time i go practice at school someone is playing this =]
