In all reality, I would have to say that in the beginning they probably would have preferred to eliminate it. Unfortunately for them, the nature of the Internet and other tech makes that an impossible task.
I think that for the mainstream it comes down to one of two philosophies, ignore them and hope they go away (but they dont) or if you cant stop them join them.
