First step to replacing either the inner tie rod or the outer tie rod is removing the jam nut on the outer tie rod end.

  • Is it possible that the commenters here don't get that I'm not a professional mechanic in a studio? I do thes with my FlipCam set down on something, and the first time through, I knocked it over when I pulled out the tie-end so I had to film it again. Yes, you normally have to bang on the spindle a couple times with a mallet to loosen it up. Anyway, I remove comments with nasty language.

  • I have used two hammer bang technique to get it out, usualy it wont go so simple as in this video.

  • Hello! im trying to remove the nut but the whole thing is spinning and i dont have that little room u had to blamp the screw what else could i do? thanks

  • However I don't recommend using a hammer to bang out the tie-rod because it may damage the tie-rod itself & worse still, the inner tie-rod since the hard banging will be transmitted throughout the whole tie-rod assembly. By using the Pitman puller, the method is gentle on the tie-rod assembly & it also doesn't destroy the rubber boot as when a pickle fork and a hammer is used. However before using the Pitman puller, it is necessary to bang a few times on the joint with a hammer to loosen it.

  • The correct tool to use when dis-assemblying the outer tie-rod is called the Pitman puller. It has two rigid claws to hold onto the metal ledge of the knuckle and a centre bolt to push the tie-rod out of the knuckle. Ensure that both the rigid claws of Pitman puller you buy can fit onto the knuckle ledge; otherwise having only one claw on, you can still turn the centre bolt to push out the tie-rod. In a video by richpin, he could dis-assemble the tie-rod by just using a socket and a hammer.

  • @vietinc Oh my just saw this response, I ended up buying a cheap set of pickle forks, I got the ball joint off and the tie rod off also though it was junked..Put a new ball joint and tie rod and knuckle on at home then...Thanks again

  • @rainallday i would to go autozone or advance auto and ask them to rent you a tie rod removal kit..... just fit it, screw it from the bottom and it pop right out... took me 2min tops. looks somehting like this

  • I spent 2 hours at a junkyard unable to get the tie rod end loose..All I had was a heavy mallet hammer....tons of smashing it still wouldnt loosen it....In the end I gave up as I ran out of time and energy......I really needed a pickle fork...next time I'm taking one....

  • shit i had to use a damn pickle fork which tore the boot :/ lol

  • unconvincingly simple. wish mine came apart that it by threatening it with a spanner...
