This video demonstrates the use of FlightGear for UAS hardware in the loop testing. FlightGear outputs the raw IMU + GPS data to an external embedded board that runs a 15 state kalman filter as well as an autopilot and routing algorithm. The board generates actuator commands which are sent back to FlightGear to manipulate the simulated aircraft's control surfaces. This allows testing all the code paths on the embedded system (except the code that processes the real sensor data and drives the real actuators.)

  • FlightGear can ouptut simulated sensor values via an ethernet interface, so I have my hardware setup to be able to read either real sensor values or flightgear sensor data via a network socket interface.

  • The flight plan, navigation, attitude estimation, and autopilot are all handled by the external hardware. Work progresses on the project.
