The famous wetlands of Kakadu have enormous things to offer. The abundance of birds is unprecedented. The billabongs owe their existence to the alligator rivers which flow well outside their banks during the rainy season.
Now the white egret can still catch its fish, during the summer period the billabong dries up and there is not much for it to find. The rivers supply this area with the necessary organic matter. Billabongs are created by differences in the rivers' water levels. If the water in the rivers drops then the billabongs are cut off from the main supply and they form isolated pools. Only after the next rainy season do they again form a whole with the rivers. Animals such as the saltwater crocodile for example, travel along with the water. During the wet season you can find them far into Kakadu.
