What a beautiful, sonorious tone! I've played trombone 30+ years and never heard an ophecleide till now! Quite unique! I think you should not equate this with a euphonium - no "valvey" sound, nor a trombone - totaly unique!

Like I said elsewhere on YouTube, I really wonder why this instrument has fallen out of favor. The sound is so beautiful. Sounds almost like the trombone. Is the fingering very complicated?

What I'd like to find is an Eb Contrabass ophicleide. Any idea where I could get one?

Nice, J.C. Thanks for sharing!

its sound is harder than basson but softer than euphonium or tuba. So this instrument has original sound and must be restored!
Complicated is an understatement! It's unlike any other brass or woodwind instrument. In some ways it's a backwards bassoon for the first octave, then it gets very strange. The unique thing about the ophicleide is that all the keys (except one) are closed, and you press the levers to open them, rather than the other way around. Only the Contrabasse an anche and the contrabassophone share that style of fingering.

The only "Monster" ophicleide not in a museum was made by Robb Stewart and is owned privately. None are likely to come onto the market anytime soon, and they would be valued at a fortune if they did. You'd probably be better off commissioning a copy, though that pricetag would be rather large.

This was recorded on a FlipVideo camera at some distance. There is a better quality video on 8mm; I'll see if I can post it in that better audio format.
