Bockfest 2009

Here's a taste of what happened at Bockfest 2009. Beer lovers standing outside, drinking beer, waiting for a toilet, and getting pelted with fish bits. Some call it crazy. In Madison WI we call it Bockfest -- the first chance to taste Maibock from Capital Brewery. Or you can have a truly cold stein of our Platinum Blonde Doppelbock. Hence, Bockfest, an event that draws over 2,500 attendees to Capital Brewery in Middleton, Wisconsin.

But there's more than just lots of beer. We feature live music in our Bier Garten. We hold a costume contest and our annual 1K run (a.k.a., the "Running of the Blondes"). But the real highpoint is when Capital Brewmaster Kirby Nelson appears on the roof of the brewery, riding a green dinosaur. He dismounts, gives a little speech, and proceeds to throw smoked chubs to the thousands below.

Note: Catching an exploding fish is rather "gutsy." It disintegrates upon impact, spraying the catcher or anyone nearby. Catching an intact fish head means you get a free beer (good luck with that). "We believe that anyone willing to get fish thrown at them should have a chance for more than a bad stink!" says Nelson.

wow that looks so much fun, I've only drank their oktoberfest but will keep my eyes out for the blond dopplebock, I love dopplebocks
