Monster tornadic supercell near Ness City, Kansas. This storm produced a damaging tornado near Ellis and overturned several semi trailers as it crossed I-70.

  • What a memorable day that was. We were on the storm that produced the first 2 tornadoes near Quinter then dropped down to the Ness City storm. It was a spectacular storm, but in hindsight it was a mistake because it caused us to miss the EF4 that would cross I-70 later in the evening. Oh well, it feels good to have chased during the largest tornado outbreak in Kansas history

  • Thats funny, because that is exactly what we did. After the first Quinter tornado, we also dropped south to the Ness City storm. What a huge storm that was but I was very upset when I heard about the huge tornado in Quinter again!

  • This is one situation where auto focus can kill a good video. I had the same problem on this chase also. I now film these storms with manual, because the auto focus killed my video of the Lane County Kansas tornado. It was so windy that day. You want to zoom in on the tornado, Then auto focus suddenly becomes auto unfocused. Drives me crazy, so I know how you feel when your cam does that to you. Still a good video though. It brings back memories of those 2 days seeing tornadoes for the 1st time.

  • Yeah, I seem to have that problem especially in low light or lightning videos. What's the best way to prevent that?

  • Yeah, we were up north near Quinter and saw that tornado then headed down south of Ness City and watched this beast form, Followed it north of Ness City and also saw it drop one northeast of town but didnt get it on film for some stupid reason.

  • Talk about the wild wild westcoast of California all yall want, I'll take my earthquakes that happen every so often over the hundreds of tornados and supercell storms that occur every year in the midwest. LMAO

  • stronger homes cost to much, the older farm homes had thicker planks and good nailing & withstood much stronger winds, except large hail could still punch holes through the roof, unlike todays slap-together homes. The always alternative, the good old storm shelter, just make sure you take all your unreplaceables with you like photos, jewels, & keep them in one of those big plastic tubs, in other words just have a plan,,,lol

  • I'm pagan, and I wish I was in the middle of that. It would have been splendid.

  • yea me too i was filming a pretty intense lightning storm in Sanford, FL every time the lightning flashed my camera would out focus with lightning was probably flashing 3 flashes to every 5 seconds round about it was utterly annoying so i had to half focus on a building across from my apartment block missing most of the action and my camera doesnt have a option to do manual focusing!

but the dvd got destroyed when i ran over it with my computer chair by accident oops!

  • Your camcorder should have a manual focus setting. Switch it to manual focus in the low light and bad contrast situations. If your camcorder behaves anything like mine, it will automatically switch to autofocus again if have had your camcorder turned off for a few hours. So if you're chasing the very next day, make sure it hasn't gone back to autofocus. This happened to me when I was filming the Kay County tornado in Oklahoma. Manual focus works great for night storms also. Hope this helps you.

  • Great video of a classic supercell!

  • cool
