My engine is checked out to run either 100LL or high octane auto fuel, the problem is there are no warnings on the pumps of the following....
Fiberglass tanks dissolve when filled with Ethanol, literally. The alcohol, which is a solvent, begins to molecularly disassemble the fiberglass resin matrix. Eventually, the tank may become structurally unstable as it softens, and fuel may begin to leak. A number of cases have already been reported. the dissolved components, styrene and polyester, make their way along with the fuel to the engine. The result is a black, gooey substance that can be found beneath the carburetor and on valves and valve guides. This often leads to valve seizure, poor running, and eventually engine failure. In some cases, repairs are not economically feasible. Ethanol may also damage plastic and rubber components such as fuel lines and filters. Fuel hose that is alcohol-resistant, such as type A1, is usually so labeled.
Some stations carry no warnings of their fuel even containing alcohol, this has brought on a federal class action lawsuit filed in Los Angeles and a boat owner in Florida, Erick Kelecseny contacted the Fort Lauderdale personal injury law firm Kopelowitz Ostrow, who filed suit Aug. 12 in U.S. District Court. They allege that Chevron, Exxon Mobil, BP America, Shell and ConocoPhillips know about the problems ethanol causes to causes boats, but continue to market blended gasoline.
I have to tear my plane apart to take out the fuel tank and as of today I have done it for the 3rd time thinking I must really have luck on my side to be blessed with the job of patching my tank after every flight. This time I have noticed that the whole tank itself doesn't seem to be as rigid as before. Although my carburetor has been clean every time I have inspected it, the fuel, even when visually clear will still load up the engine enough to to ruin my day as you can see in two ..er 3 of my videos.

  • Have you made sure your valves are adjusted? They are solid lifters on these engines and you've gotta adjust them often.

  • @erinlassley

Thanks, fuel was eating up my fiberglass tank...check out my video comments to see the whole story.

  • Any idea where I can get plans for this aircraft now? Preceptor doesn't seems to be a defunct operation now.

  • God dam all ethanol fuel forced on equipment that was never designed to use it.

  • yeah i do auto mec. work. pretty sad all the hell it can cause w/ carbs almost all small engines need carb work every year now? seems quality is not consistent anymore? should be on aircraft for sure.

  • @state8citizen Gotcha! I missed that the first time. I bet that was fun trying to figure that problem out. Ethanol is just a big, fat NO for air-cooled engines. People get away with it, but there is a reason you don't find ethanol at the airport pumps.

  • Thank God for long runways. A good example of why one should always avoid a midfield departure. Best of luck with solving and preventing the problem.

  • Yea. I'd never trust that one again...

  • never fun

  • ditch that engine and get another before it ditches your life!
