Glider winch launch

A little subtlety is very useful! At Kent there is a bump in the field, you often do not see the glider till it is established in the climb (you K8 jockeys know who you are...) and it is like fishing with a V8! I tried to teach speed control as opposed to throttle position... that way everybody gets the same ride. Some days there was everything from the T21 to the ASH 25 on the wire! Sod's law says the more you drive the winch, the worse your own launch experiences get... very true....

jesus thats is how u break weak links going fulll power on the winch tht quick and not t mention damaging the tail wheel or with some k-13s skids!

Both that and gradual power apply. At my club we only need to hold the tail down on our DG505. We also have a K13, which doesn't suffer from this issue as our winch doesn't apply full power in one chunk. :)

The most widely accepted procedure is to have a crew member hold the tail of the glider down during the launch to keep the nose up.
If the nose is down, it causes two problems:
1) The CofG Winch Launch hook on the glider can become damaged when drug on the ground.
2) When full power is applied to the Winch, the tail wheel can break off as a result of the tail slapping down. (The tail should be held down to prevent this.)

three words: don't trust autofocus

In which case full power should be applied gradually, not so the tail slaps the ground
