Unavailable since it's broadcast on the Radio Lab in 1974. Michael Christopher, Harry Mishkin and Bill Reinhardt talk to Frank Zappa after his performance at the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon. Germans, pop culture, the music scene and Frank's dubious popularity are discussed. (Part 1 of 2)

  • @willyrein funny i got rid of all my original bonzo dog band vinyl.......then i found their videos on youtube and realized they must be [seen].....i'm amazed at how well they pulled off their music live and how much work went into the theatrics -- satire that is just plain funny, without being mean.

  • @posthumanhero Good discussion, u are right on many points! BTW I played trhe 'Bonzo Dog Band' frequently on my radio show along with FZ. I was aware of their outrageous brand of comedy and social cynicism. I only had limited access to BDB stuff then.

  • @superkulmedkniv25 look up the bonzo dog band: they were foreal: they pulled off their lp tracks with thoroughly orchestrated visuals and all........'permeate' as in becoming part of......'left-brained' as in logical -- most rock 'geniuses' (i've noticed) through complexity/speed/diligence seem to appeal to that part of the brain...no wonder so many men love hendrix or zappa while most women tolerate it at best.

  • @posthumanhero even though i'm not a fan of drugs, i don't fully agree with his drug stance either. But what do you mean with "left brained", "the bonzo dog band" and "permeating the music". I don't get it. Please explain

  • @superkulmedkniv25 all seems a little left brained to me....even in the 60s, for all his big talk, the bonzo dog band were really doing the real work live in concert......i have no problem with big talkers, as i am one myself -- i only [really] have a problem with them when the talking starts to permeate the music......then we're supposed to be so tolerant of [them]?.....i also think his drug stance was rather myopic: like we all become assholes like he when doing such things.

  • @posthumanhero I've had many a spiritual experience with FZ's music. Even though he definatly had a very cynical and scientific way of approaching music, it's obvious that he had a deep passion for the emotional side of music, because so many of his tracks have much more to them than just random sounds. Zappa didn't teach things he couldn't prove, and this is why he never bothered to much about talking about things like spirits, vibes and all that stuff.

  • his c nstant reiteration of 'it's all about entertainment' leads me to believe the genius may not have had a clue about the spiritual nature of music, vibe, mantra, trance, true sincerity etc.

  • @Hutchentoot yes, we need more from our messiah......he teaches us......... we learn from him.....if only more people thought instead of felt.......he's naturally crazy.

  • @superkulmedkniv25 yes, the most intelligent........he really knew............the genius.

  • @exentr yes, he knew everything, he thought a lot.....a real role model for appolonean art with self conscious flourishes of dyonisian energy.
