@aware4autism I agree. Only a doctor can truly determine whether a child has autism. Some behaviours can happen for any reason, it doesn't always mean he or she has Autism.

@462kitkat Yeah, Just after i wrote this, it turned into hand clapping. Thanks for the reply.

@banjosandwashboards this looks normal to me. my niece gets excited like this as well and i don't suspect shes autistic. if you read the other comments, others also say that just because they do this doesn't mean anything. all it means it shes excited. thats why i dont like this video. so don't worry :)

My 8 month old does this. Is it normal?

Every single child I have ever met flap there arms like that at around 2 to 3 years of age. If that was a sign of autism it would mean that everyone has it.

The hand flapping part of some Developmental disorders, is not what is seen here. We have dealt with hand flapping in four males with autism in our family. The hand flapping usually seen with autistic behavior is excessive, it is a form of stemming, of a reaction too much stimuli or a reaction to something that has kicked off OCD behaviors.

It looks to me she's excited she's watching cartoons.

@rogerfreeman1 I know hand flapping is mayby the child in playing of excitded .
Hand-flapping is NOT specific to autism! It occurs in otherwise normally developing children too. For autism one must look at the child's communication patterns and reciprocal relationships, not only at repetitive behaviours. -- Roger D. Freeman, M.D.

@rogerfreeman1 Thank you. I am tired of people watching this one video and thinking this is the one and only diagnostic criteria for autism. Most all "early signs of autism" will occur in typical children. As you stated, one must also look at the other diagnostic criterias.

Dear Ms,
A pleasant day to you and your family.
I jm from the Philippines. It was just today that we came to an observation of the possibility that our child might have the same condition as well.
The hand flapping of your baby jade is almost identical to our daughter also. Might you give us some useful tips and links on how to further assist for the development of our child?
It is well to note however that we simply "suspect" that she has the same condition.
Sincerely,
Junmer

@junmerllubit I would consult a developmental pediatrician for further guidance. Good luck to you!

i do worry that people are looking for problems and finding them when its all just part of growing up. my little girl flapped her hands hummed for an hours on end and did all sorts of things that we thought was kind of crazy between the ages of 0 and 5 but now she is just about to turn 7 she is a happy smart kid who has superb social skills and is doing great at school all of the odd stuff she has grown out of . so all im saying is dont drug your kids up just wait and see .and let them grow.

@scribs01 never drugged my kid up, but 6 years later, still autistic.
the thing to look for in children like your daughter is communication skills. Did she ever lose them,or have a delay in them? That is the hallmark sign of autism.
