Yes and time loops. The story will repeat itself again and again. Time probably loops because Yan chose to travel back in time and save himself from death. He cheated death, but the price was a time paradox, which forced time into a loop. The time loop prevents time from progressing and thus prevents the old ones from returning. You could say, that Yan saved the world by placing it in a time loop when the old one were just about to enter the gates of time and appear in our world.

the way I understood the ending is that the nazi became the emperor, ryan changed the timeline but no matter what the key events remained the same... basically you cannot change the destiny no matter what you do.. "key" events will happen anyway just in different circumstances..

Yan saved the world, but at the same time the world lost its future, since time would no longer be able to progress...

That is the way I understand the ending anyway.
