  • @HomoGnosticus You've obviously never had one then. No good for heavy grinding but great when you want to cut through something quickly without the hassle of getting extension leads wound out. It would never replace a mains powered machine for me anyway. The red light comes on too easily and it shuts down.

  • Bosch is the best cordless grinder by a mile.

  • I believe cordless grinder makes little sense.

  • @@MacsCanfly

it may be the carbon brush

  • whats that thing you unscrewed

  • Yes, what it does it monitors speed and when it falls below certain RPM the grinder will turn the red lights on, and if you continue it will disconnect the battery from the motor (internally, via a solid-state relay). This is to prevent damage to the motor and cells inside the battery. You need to turn it off and then back on to restart it.

  • it really sucks for grinding. One 3AH battery is good for 15 cuts of 1/2 steel rebar with a 2mm disk (~23 cuts with a 1mm disc). It's a cut-off tool and not really a grinder. I ended up with Dewalt DC415 36v grinder/cut-off tool and it's still far from being called a grinder, but in terms of cuts/watt it's much better than makita.

Makita yields 15 cuts at 54 W-h and dewalt 30 at 82 W-h. Basically Dewalt has 50% more energy in the battery but cuts 100% more material.
