A short film showing the 70 inch Bull pumping engine at Kew Bridge Steam Museum being 'put to work' by Nick Morgan. This is the only working Bull type Cornish pumping engine in the World, and the film shows how the engine has to be worked by hand until the stroke length is consistent before the engine can be self-acting. '70 inch' is the diameter of the steam cylinder, which is inverted directly over the pump plunger. The engine pumped water to supply West London from 1859 until about 1943 and was on standby until 1958.

  • Interesting view of a very curious machine; I've seen it working and it really isn't easy to see what's happening. Sorry, but I could have done without the music, the sound of the machine is really music enough!

  • Thanks for the comment. I understand what you mean about music - it doesn't work for everyone. The raw footage does have a certain charm on its own!
