2. After a rubber compound has been mixed, it has to be processed into its intended form. This video shows sheet rubber being created in calenders. Calenders are machines made of three or more steel rollers. A calender squeezes rubber compounds between the rollers, to create a continuous band of a specific width and thickness. Often, one of the rollers will be embossed with a design -- for example, a sole tread design, as shown in the first part of the video. A calender can also produce the thin sheet rubber used on the outer surface of a boot, or it can laminate rubber to fabric, to allow fabric linings to be
bonded to other parts. In the later part of this video, black
rubber is being calendered into a band, which is then slit to produce narrow strips of rubber needed in certain areas of a rubber boot.
