  • Mats was the most complete player of the 80s along with McEnroe. Head and shoulders above Lendl in that regard. The only other 80s player close was Edberg and had played another French final he prolly would have won it. In 89 he didnt have the complete game. But 91-93 he shud have won the French.

  • @brianclough Mats is my fav player of all time period. He did an interview a year or two ago in which he said he thinks he would have won Wimbledon if he played like he played in Australia. He said he felt some strange peer pressure to serve and volley at Wimby and in the later rounds the best players had better returns of serve. In my mind I know he would have if he stayed back a lil more and mixed it up. Lets face it at that time he was the most complete player in the world besides McEnroe.

  • @kinglear Absolutely. Controlled aggression. Like the python slowly sufficating the tiger by slowly and patiently squeezing with every exhale of the tiger's breath. Until no more breaths. Love how he just methodically wears apponents away until they throw their hands up and die. Agassi 1985 French Open.

  • My favourite player at the time - Mats Wilander.

But he just couldn't win Wimbledon, although he did win a Slam on grass, at the Aussie Open.

  • Lendl had just become the only player in history to win three tournaments in three weeks in three different surfaces.

  • wilander the king of clay

  • I love Wilander's backhand. I like the way he leans into it. I also like how his game is so modern. A lot of players in the 80s used different stroke techniques than today's players, but Wilander's strokes look as modern as Andy Murray's strokes. Just to give an example of a modern player.

  • come on mats

  • Ivan Lendl lost 6 of his first 7 Grand Slam finals. He then won 7 of the next 12. His total Grand Slam final win-loss record is 8-11.
