After a Northern Iowa kickoff return, Wofford player Stephon Shelton fails to take a knee in the endzone - keeping the play live. Northern Iowa defenders strip the ball from him the endzone and score a touchdown.

I see things like this and wonder how players at this level still don't understand the rules?

It's an AUTOMATIC TOUCHBACK in high school ball when a kick or punt goes into the endzone.

Yes it would have been a touchback if this were high school ball. The ball would dead the instant it went into the endzone. I wondering if that's what this kid was thinking at the time.

I can't say that I ever seen the officials blow it dead prematurely on a play like this. You may be confusing this kind of play with the rules of high school football. In high school football, a kick or punt into the endzone is automatically dead when it crosses into the end zone, so the official would be CORRECT to blow it dead immediately when it went into the endzone. But not in college football (as this was) or the pros.

Assuming that you actually catch it after signalling the fair catch, it is a touchback.
