We gathered at the top of Gastonbury Tor at 7.30 pm on 3 July 2011 in support of the Jerusalem Hug taking place around the city walls on the same day.
The ceremony, led by Debra Magdalene (Director of Hugs for Global Hugs) started with silence and meditation. The Global Peace Prayer channelled by Vanessa Edwards was then read out by everyone in unison. Anthony John from the City of Light Project in Glastonbury then said a few touching words. He related the story of a space shuttle astronaut who observed the earth from space and noted that there were no borders - it is man who creates these imaginary lines on maps and this can create division. Imagine living in a world without borders ...
We circled the Tor to the beating sound from the drummers then we hugged the tower at the top of the Tor, ending the ceremony with hugs and dancing.
Why Jerusalem?
The city of Jerusalem is considered to be the most important location to develop a peace process between Palestinians and Israelis. It is a unique place in the Middle East, where 500.000 Israelis and 200.000 Palestinians are living and working together closely. If there is any chance to reconcile Palestinians and Israelis, it will be in Jerusalem.
What connects the Palestinians with the Israeli inhabitants of Jerusalem is their common love for the Old City, being a sanctuary for both Jews and Muslims. With these events, we create an experience of Peace, giving a taste of what it means to live together in love, oneness, and harmony.
Jerusalem stands as a symbol for peace and forgiveness in the world. Let Jerusalem be a city of connection, the heart of the world where unity and peace exist for all.
