Collective bargaining is at the core of democracy.. Unions werent given anything, the people in them fought for it. A union is not a "business" its people fighting for their rights.
Without some kind of union workers are screwed, should be a national health union to force medicinal companies and hospitals to do collective bargaining (since Obama turned out to be a puppet).

What clout, Dr. Paul?

Lots of things from all sides have gone out of control, from Companies to Unions to Govt. Yet Unions are still the best foundation to help restore a Middle Class, which Unions and small business both helped build. If you are in a Union, or a Society, there will be dues and taxes to pay. They attack the Teachers pensions now, next will be the Police and Firemen's. We must find a way to keep the profits local, so cities and States can be funded.

Many have said that unions have lost their position in America. Yes they have declined, but the history of the labor forces struggles have not been taught well enough in schools and the important lessons have been lost. Ludlow, Colorado 1914. One reason there were less killed was for the tent colony being prepared by digging fox holes in their tents. Politicians today do wash these lessons away, since "society" has improved, and assume we can't go backwards.

Some interesting uneducated opinions. You say the work place is Safe now? Why is OSHA still finding so many safety violations? You say that employers in those union industries have gone bankrupt? Next time you see Company trucks driving by, find out if their union or non-union companies, and compare the condition of the vehicles. You say the company tries to coordinate with their employees? That is the intention of a bargaining agreement, everything as possibly could be, in black and white.

@ Looozzzer, Do you like your 8 hour work day? Paid Vacation? Weekends off? Time spent with family on labor day? Your wages high enough that your children don't have to work just to eat? Unions assisted in creating laws that abolish child labor in dangerous industries. You like OSHA keeping your employer from telling you its okay to do life threatening tasks? Union Members who pay dues have created a standard of living that has benefited everyone. Don't say Thank you. Your Welcome.

There are non union jobs just like there are union jobs. You have the right to work for whoever you want to!!! My union job pays me around $10 more than my non union counterpart. I pay just over $300 a year in dues which is tax deductable. I also have a pension and health insurance for my entire family that is paid by the company I work for. The Republicans have you all confused about what "Right to Work" is. It really means right to work FOR LESS and NO BENEFITS!!! Do your research!!!!

@freefalable I have to comment on my thumbs up to your post. Public sector jobs are a taxpayer funded position. If the working conditions are so poor that a union is required, then the taxpayers should stop paying tax. The public voice should be the voice of reason. Getting our tax dollars robbed to pay our public service workers a far higher salary than what we can expect is ridiculous! We don't need a larger government. Not everyone wants to, or can afford working for uncle Sam.

@Spjungen I like your point. I don't discount that Unions once had a very positive influence, but now the corruption makes them worse than what they originally tried to fight. I have never hear a union conversation about being so good at what they do to be able to offer a service at a better value than the competition. If they don't start working with 'competition' in mind, all union jobs will soon be lost forever.
Glad to hear Ron Paul lay this out.

It's not fair for unions to FORCE everyone who works for a company or in an industry to pay dues to them. Ron Paul is right. Union membership should only be voluntary! That's fairer, freer, and just sensible!
