Probably because of the time he played with the Rangers and that he's most identified as a Ranger. Whereas Messier is also remembered for his days with the Oilers. As a Rangers fan of more than 25 years, I'm counting Leetch and Mike Richter as my favorite Rangers and probably the best in the team's history.
