Turk's Cap is the more well known common name and the botanical name is Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii. This was a common sight in old southern gardens. The upright blooms produce a profuse amount of nectar. The plant does well in shade or sun although it blooms better in full sun. The birds feed from both the inside of the bloom and outside around the base. This is where many hummingbird battles take place.
Thank you for sharing the great videos of ruby-throateds this week. Is that a cultivar of the Turk's Cap...maybe the one called 'Big Momma'?
