This is another home movie, taken in 1967, when we took the kids to the train to watch Ringling Bros. unload the circus animals...and Ned got on TV.

  • Some of these elephants in this video are still forced to endure this life of being chained on the train and shuffled from parking lot to parking lot. Imagine being kept in chains for over 40 years. Watching this video I was also struck by the people laughing at the elephants when they were urinating. What is it about some people that they laugh when an elephant, or any other animal, urinates or defecates. I don't get it.

  • I took this video in 1967. I have since become aware of the plight of elephants in captivity and have become a supporter of the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee...so I've at least become enlightened!

  • It is amazing to find vintage video of this tradition. I worked for this show recently and it is very interesting how things are so differant and some things are still the same. Over time the show has learned what works and what doesn't. During the two years that I worked with horses I never saw abuse that people claim happens on a daily basis. I seriously doubt any of the elephants in this video are still performing and they are not chained inside the train. People who weren't there don't know.

  • Patcuvie: this is an interesting look at history because you can see that back in the '60's people were generally so unaware of the inherent animal abuse of circuses that they let them observe and film them freely..... something I'm sure you have a bit of trouble with now! Basykes: not that I'm blaming you; in 1967 almost nobody was aware of anything wrong with circuses.

  • Thank you basykes for your thoughtful response. I go out every year to videotape the unloading and loading of the elephants in Oakland so I was very interested in your video and I thank you for posting it.

  • I bet some PETA people are going to rant about this?
