England vs. Australia, First test at Headingley in 1989.

Allan Border's "captain cranky" leadership was clearly the tonic for players such as Steve Waugh and Mark Taylor who suddenly came of age during the famous 1989 Ashes series. These two classic square drives, a trademark of Waugh, were scored on the way to 177 not out in the First Test.

Australia went on to declare on 601/7, which was consolidated by a masterclass on seam bowling by Terry Alderman who took ten wickets for the match.

  • 1. Backfoot drive

    2. Cut.

  • @cquilty1 He's hardly rabble rousing or coming across as angry. Hardly subtle or Nabakovian in your pickup.

  • Steve Waugh gold right there. I watched every ball of that innings. Shaky early and then just went to town on the poor old poms. After looking crap for the first hour he hit a off/straight drive that was effortless and just held the pose. Richi Benaud said I swear that was nothing more than a defensive push. Post that drive it was 10+ years of torment for the poms every time s.waugh walked to the crease in ashes battles. Please post more of this innings.

  • Steve Waugh is simply the master of this game.

He just do things so easily that it looks simple, but they aren't.

Steve Waugh the great was a very very very good student of this game :)

    I love watching him.

  • that was a great square cut there, still waiting on the drive i was promised

  • WHACK !!!! GREAT JUDGE OF THE PITCH REALLY LATE!! he was on fire in 89 in england

  • ahhhh, bliss!

  • Happened to hear a lot about Mark, but Steve is just & Just Inc............

  • @i'llaveanicehotcuppa,

Why the need to refer to Derek Pringle as an "idiot?" Is that really necessary?

And why are you so keen to spring to Imrankniazi's defense? Are you one and the same?

Nabakov only has one good book and we both know which one. Still, nice to see Vladimir being used in a YouTube post, particularly in a cricket video.
