The Cosmic Calendar is a scale in which the lifetime of the universe is mapped onto a calendrical year; that is to say, the Big Bang took place on a cosmic January 1 at precisely midnight, and today's date and time is December 31 at midnight.

On this calendar, the solar system did not appear until September 9, life on Earth arose on September 30, the first dinosaurs appeared on December 25th, the first flowers on December 28th, and the first primates on December 30. The first humans did not arrive until around 10:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, and all of human history has been recorded in the last minute. The Middle Ages to the present is a little more than one second. On this timescale, an average human life is about 0.15 seconds.

The scale was popularized by Carl Sagan in his book The Dragons of Eden and on the television series Cosmos, which he hosted.

Carl Edward Sagan, Ph.D. (1934-1996) was an American astronomer, astrochemist, author, and highly successful popularizer of astronomy, astrophysics and other natural sciences. He pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI).

He is world-famous for writing popular science books and for co-writing and presenting the award-winning 1980 television series "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage", which has been seen by more than 600 million people in over 60 countries, making it the most widely watched PBS program in history.

A book to accompany the program was also published. He also wrote the novel "Contact", the basis for the 1997 Robert Zemecki's film of the same name starring Jodie Foster.

During his lifetime, Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and popular articles and was author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books. In his works, he frequently advocated skeptical inquiry, secular humanism, and the scientific method.

  • Only three stars? I see the creationists fundies have been busy down-voting again.

So far, I have yet to see a Cosmos video that is deserving of anything less than a five. Watching these videos brings a total sense of humility and awe. Five stars.

You have no idea how many times I've heard that one ^^

If you'd actually read what I wrote above, you would see that only the part between quotation marks was a quote. Hence the term "quotation" marks.

    This part was my own:

"Do you *pretend* not to believe in Zeus? Apollo? Vishnu? The Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Didn't think so. Likewise, there's no pretense in my disbelief in your god."

I'll await your response with bated breath.

  • @Caedyron When you state an original thought I will reply with one.

  • @coolvideo28

Not quote mined, but an actual quote.

A thought does not need to be original to be valid.

Any more useless tangents you want to go off in? Or do you actually want to respond to my comment..?

  • @Caedyron If you would like to respond again please come up with an original thought, everything you said was quote mined. I will pray for your denial to fall today as it has yesturday and everyday .

Do you *pretend* not to believe in Zeus? Apollo? Vishnu? The Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Didn't think so. Likewise, there's no pretense in my disbelief in your god. Or, in the words of Stephen Roberts:

"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
