  • hi im a orange belt in shorin ryu karate and im 15, can someone tell me the point of the katas cause idk see how they would help me?? in my class we learn the kick and katas and when were 16 we learn the techniques i just dont see the point in the katas. any help would be great thanks

  • @jalen77232 good question. The kata are important because they contain the signature techniques of karate. Unfortunately, much modern kata has been heavily modified for aesthetic reasons and the "bunkai" has consequently been lost. Secondarily, kata teaches you "how to move" in karate: knees bent, feet shuffling, back straight, etc.

  • could be me, but I think drilling this with a partner is much more ffective than doing these techniques as a kata in term of muscle memory

  • @alaricofarabia I agree. This is only a demo for informational purposes.

  • @jalen77232 put easy a kata is a circuit lets you work on all the techniques at once. Instead one by one by one by one by one. That would take forever, ancient karateka had to come up with a circuit that would allow efficient use of time. Its not hard to figure out just use you're analytical skills, and you could have come to the same conclusion.

  • @ARNAKLDO apples and Oranges whats better...shotokan is Japanese and shorin ryu is Okinawan ...know this is an old post

  • This is a very nice demonstration - paced right to instruct those unfamiliar with the techniques shown, and still showing that those techniques clearly have genuine applicability.

  • any guys of this style in NC?

  • uve proved well how v use kathas 2 a real fight.

  • @ARNAKLDO I've done shotokan for 35 years. I love this video. Shotokan is superior for it's simplified powerful smashing technique that will end a fight very quickly. Shorin-ryu is superior for the sophisticated kata applications that will end a fight very quickly. Shotokan came from Shorin Ryu but lost the apps in the simplifyng process. Many people are trying to re-engineer what you see in this video back into their shotokan technique.

Choose the instructor, not the style.
