One time I approached a guy in Hong Kong to ask him a question. I asked in Cantonese and he answered: "唔識講英文"。 I figured he must have just assumed that I asked in English, so I asked a couple of more times in Cantonese, but he kept repeating, "唔識講英文". Finally, exasperated I asked, "你識唔識講廣東話亞?"

He then answered in perfect English, "Look, I just don't want to talk to you, okay?"

I think your ability to speak Canto is awesome. We native speakers just take our language (I know people call it a dialect) for granted and do not care about it much. We should try to conserve it before it's too late!
