This is a multimedia representation of a culminating performance by participants in the Higher Diploma in Economics and the BA (Single Honours - Economics) 2010-2011, UCC. In this project, participants were asked to compose a visual representation and abstract on the theme of Marshall's definition of Economics as the 'study of the ordinary business of life'. This project was designed as a performance (through the lens of Project Zero's Teaching for Understanding Guide). It has been presented at Engaging Minds: NAIRTL 5th Annual Conference, Enhancement Conference and the Developments in Economics Education conference. I have further themed this video as an example of improvisation in an assessment setting. I have chosen Miles Davis' 'Shout' as a musical companion to this piece as a representation of the jazz improviser - wherein the soloist improvises a melodic solo - a metaphor that these students were asked to engage with in this assessment. I choose Shout not only as an example of improvisation but also, for me, as a joyous representation of said improvisation by Davis -- for me, he seems to use his instrument to proclaim a very positive, public musical statement. While the subject matter of the students' works are not necessarily joyous; dealing with recession etc, they are, I think, a joyous representation of their engagement with the project and their use of their instruments to proclaim a very positive and public multi-media representation of their understanding of the 'ordinary business of life'. The music is included as a teaching tool. I do not own the rights to this music.
