Many people, even behavioral specialists, doubt that Spencer has Asperger's Syndrome when they meet him because he has adopted so many "neurotypical" behaviors in social settings, and is often charming and responsive when he has an audience. Unlike most children in the Autism Spectrum of Disorders, Spencer is fortunate not only to have terrific support in his school system, but to receive hours of daily, intensive coaching in my home. However, when put into situations where he might fall short of perceived expectations (such as an educational environment) his ASD symptoms emerge vividly. This two-part series shows how my precious little man struggles with dyslexia, attention and emotion in trying to overcome learning plateus, and the kind of patience and guidance required to coach him.
