Billy Joel's MOTORCYCLE As Art and Icon

VVH-TV Reporter Debbie Tuma interviews Billy Joel at the Christy Center in Sag Harbor.
20th Century Cycles is a collaboration between Billy Joel and Lighthouse Harley-Davidson. The concept is to pay homage to the heritage and legacy of the American Icon that is the Harley-Davidson® motorcycle brand with over 100 years in continuous operation.

In 2005, Billy Joel approached Lighthouse Harley-Davidson about doing a retro look to the new Harley-Davidson® Sportster® model he had just purchased. Billys collaboration with Rob Schneider, owner of Lighthouse Harley-Davidson and Bill Blackford, the General Manager, turned out a bike that turned heads everywhere Billy went.

Soon after the completion and success of his Sportster®, Billy decided to try his hand at one more this time with a 2005 HD® Springer® Classic. The result, a 1940s Knucklehead look that even the old-timers thought was real vintage iron. The response to these two creations was so overwhelming that Billy and Rob decided to put these and 2 other models into production as pre-packaged, fully accessorized Harley-Davidson® bikes.

Lighthouse Harley-Davidson will be offering these models for sale. Each one will come with a Letter of Authenticity signed by the Piano-Man himself, certifying that they are unique re-creations that include many of the accessories and hand fabricated parts that went into Billys own bikes.

It doesnt end thereBilly and Rob will be exploring other models that would be good retro versions to expand the line-up. We like to think of these bikes as new rides with classic pride.

  • why did you cut off Robs interview at the end? Billy Rules..OCC too!!!

  • LOL! Billy needs to get back to BSA and figure out how to fix them right these are bolt on accessory bikes so?. LOL! I'll build him some real modern old looking HD racers.

  • The difference between the new and the old style is the level of workmanship. In the old days labor was cheap so you could afford to have parts fitted and tweaked. You have no idea the amount of labor involved in the seat rails and cargo racks on the sidecar alone.

  • @robcig I think it is All About Soul

  • The music is also brilliant. Does anyone know the name of this piece. I'm assuming it;s Billy Joel playing.

  • Congratulations to Lighthouse and Billy for a fantastic set of bikes, there's real love here, fantastic attention to detail mixed with a great vision. Way better than OCC's collaboration with Billy, which was not bad at all. Now, how much to bring one to the UK? (Rhetorical question, I couldn't afford the shipping let alone the bike!!).

I wish you every success with this range. If they ride anywhere near as good as they look, you deserve it.

  • Billy make music again.

  • Can Billy get any cooler? Didn't know about this exhibit until I saw it on his website. I'm thinking of taking my family here for fathers day, my husband & kids would LOVE it. Love the philosophy of something new with a vintage look... we did that with our home as well. Thanks Billy - you rock!!
