I drive a huge dump truck in an opencut gold mine here in Australia, and wanted to capture this, but the company I worked for would have frowned upon this, so I had to be fairly subtle.

I finally bought a new helmet cam off eBay, as some discretion was required. Well, the helmet cam worked out perfectly for the job.

I managed to capture alot of the footage I wanted by either mounting the helmet cam on the sun visor, or within the cab itself. I also filmed complete runs down into the pit, and have included them at the end of the video, speeded up to 25 times actual speed - looks good.

There is more on this technique, and many others in "The Complete Guide To Better Movie Making", at www.BetterMovieMaking.com

  • Great Video, I drive a 793D. I started in a open pit then transferd to atop a mountian. That is the best way to show what we do for 12hrs, well i work a 12hrs shift. How far is the run from the bottom to the top loaded? Just woundering how deep it is. My run was 20 mins 1st gear.

  • Yes, it's 12 hour shifts here too. The bottom of the pit is about 460m below ground level, the run out from there, usually in 2nd gear, is about 25 mins, 40 mins total for a round trip.

  • I went to the website and bought a copy of the mining guide. Now i'm about to start a traineeship with BHP Billiton at Mt Arthur coal in the Hunter Valley NSW. Thanks for the helpful ebook. Can't wait to start!

  • Thanks for all the comments - haven't been back to check this video for a while. I haven't driven the trucks for a while now - quit at the end of 2007, and put my life up for sale on eBay! I went travelling for two years after that, and have ended up in Canada. Just finished a book about the past three years, including a bit of info on the mining job.

It's called "A LIFE SOLD - What ever happened to that guy who sold his whole life on eBay?"

  • Superb video mate! Massive trucks - big boys toys - looks like a great job to me. How do you cope with the monotony though? Cheers.
