The Story Behind "Requiem for a Fallen Soldier"

Rod Sims is the composer of "Requiem for a Fallen Soldier." His goal is to acknowledge the struggles facing the American military fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The plight of our military," according to Sims, "is that they have the impossible task of being an elite fighting force one day, and diplomats trying to gain the support of the civilian population on another." The atrocities of war are well known to the troops, but few Americans understand that a "war on terror" cannot be won. Terror wears no uniform, and it has no country. It is a shadow enemy.

"I wanted to support the men and women in the military," Sims added, "but never sought to glorify war." Those who have seen combat know war should be a last resort. "Requiem" shows the price of war to soldiers and civilians. Our nation is spending $12 billion a month on the war, but the true cost is measured in blood. About 1/3 of our homeless population is made up of veterans, and many more are killing themselves as a result of psychiatric problems associated with multiple deployments and inadequate healthcare once they return from fighting.

"Our military is now trapped in a mission that places them in the middle of a civil war between rival religious groups in Iraq, and trying to stop a profitable drug cartel in Afghanistan," says Sims. "Thus far, the U.S.A. is seen as a nation that has gone from an illustrious example of democracy, to one that supports torture, intimidates a free press, illegally wiretaps citizens, and has engaged in a land grab for oil in the Middle East in the name of freedom."
