The papanicolau test is the first step in detecting HPV, which is why it is emphasized here. HPV is detected through an analysis of cervical cells, which are obtained by a cervical sample swab, commonly part of the papanicolau exam. You can have a pap exam WITHOUT analyzing cells for HPV, you can not detect cervix-invading HPV (which could pose risk of cancerous cell proliferation) without analysis of cervical cells.

When the warts are out, yes you can pass it on to your partner. HPV is a virus that you will have for the rest of your life. Nothing will happen to you as long as you do your annual pap smear. You doctor may request a procedure called colposcopy which is a lot like a pap smear just to make sure that there is no cervical cancer. Just make sure that you do not have sex while you are removing the warts. good luck.

i'm scared. i just found out that i have HPV. i'm only 16 andi feel terrible. can someone please tell me about this? will i have it for life? once i get rid of warts, and treat them, will i still be aboe to pass it to a partner?
