Bug Chasing for HIV: Is It Real?

From his HIV diagnosis in 1985 until his death in April of 2009, Cass Mann was one of the world's longest-term HIV-positive survivors. He founded Positively Healthy, the UK's only HIV/AIDS charity staffed exclusively by openly gay men, which provided HIV services including education, support, and peer counselling. These videos now archive his wisdom and insight for future generations. Here he talks about bug chasing, in which HIV negative people seek to have sex with HIV positive partners. He initially thought that bug chasing had to be a myth. Then he went online and found web sites where HIV negative gay men seek out HIV positive partners. Cass knows at least thirty people who got infected this way and without exception they regret having become HIV positive. Watch the documentary "The Gift" for a profile of some bug chasers. It's stupid, sick, suicidal, dysfunctional behavior. Some people think contracting HIV is inevitable and want to "get it over with." Some perversely long for the sense of "belonging" that they think being HIV+ will provide. It's all misconceptions and delusions and denial. No rational, well-informed human being wants to be HIV+!

What a lame excuse to get infected. It is not inevitable that every homosexual will get HIV. They are sex addicts, full of lust and want to have sex with numerous partners without a condom plain and simple. Their minds are preverted and the lust spirits they deal with will always want more and more. Deliverance is needed that only God can give.

You seem to spend a lot of your time on YouTube making superficial and negative statements about gays and HIV+ gays. Some reminders: (1) Christ preached "HEAL the sick," (Matt 10:8) not "Stigmatize the sick." (2) "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven" (Luke 6:37) How about you take a break from condemning the alleged sins of others and focus on seeking forgiveness for your OWN sins and serving others?

I made 2 comments. I don't spend a LOT of time making negative statements about homosexuals. Do you tell the people who make positive comments they spend alot of time making positive comments?

I have been saved and constantly seek forgiveness for my sins so that when I die I am ready to be with the Lord. "Judge not" does not mean you can't tell someone that what they are doing is wrong and they need deliverance. I am sure there are lots of gays that get to hell and say noone told me. I tell.

There is a strong omnipresent shame that exists in our community. Despite decades of gay pride and civil rights, we still feel the alienation from our families and the sense that we are somehow inferior. In the abscence of the 'wife/husband & kids' narrative, we have become lost and lacking of purpose. This has resulted in a void that has lead to hyper-sexualisation and self-destructive behaviours. We need to reassert our place in wider society and fill the void with something other than c*ck.

Unbelievably many gay men view contracting HIV as inevitable and that once they have it they can enter the exclusive VIP lounge just beyond the silk ropes where the real party is happening. They never again need to worry about getting HIV as they got their wish granted and can relax in the VIP lounge. I know many guys who are now HIV VIPs, who are now trying desperately to resign from this VIP Club, but it is the one club in the world that, once you join, you never get to leave. Alive, that is.

I brought up the subject of bug chasing in my Psychopathology class and everyone in the class looked at me like I was stupid. The professor didn't know anything about it either. Mind you, this is a doctoral program in psychology. These are future psychologists who denied the existence of bug chasing, and were ignorant to the reality of it. Very sad. :(

@tyrellbustin: Thank you for sharing that insight. Bug chasers need to think about the consequences of their actions for themselves, their future partners, and society. They'll need $600,000 of lifetime medical care after they contract HIV. That's a lot of pills, needle sticks, and treatment for a person to put up with, and a lot of expense they're causing for society as a whole--health insurers and/or the government. They'll expose future partners to the risk of HIV. It's not worth it!!!

Apparently I love myself and others. You should learn that many gay people are not the negative beings you & many others think we are. Also you & many other people need to realize that there are cause for people being self destructive. Many of my kind don';t get the proper love and support from family, friends and acquaintances as we grow and become adults. I happen to a fortunate person who has avoided many pitfalls. Some people never stop using sex and drugs as an escape.Sadly many gay men, never got over the trauma of dealing with a society that disapproves of them, and turn to & continue self-destructive behavior to escape. It’s a grim situation… I could be wrong about my opinion, but I bet I’m not to far off base.
