It makes calculations easier when you have the 0,0 mark at the center point of your game, making all entities relative to that point.
For example, if we wanted to get the x distance from the center of the game to randomship1 we could just use the absolute value of randomship1's x value.
Without translating the coordinates we would have to do the absolute value of (Canvas.Width/2-randomship1.X) for almost every calculation.

That laser sound is from freesound( I've used it ).
I can only assume the other sounds are from freesound too.
