They didn't write it for Joey Ramone, but when Joey was dying of cancer it was the last song he heard before he passed away. Ever since then it's had the association with Joey.

On page 74 of the fabulous book U2 by U2 there is a copy of the receipt for this Gibson Explorer, Edge bought used in 1978, in New York for $248.40 Edge states in an interview, found elsewhere here on YouTube, that it is still the same guitar save for a major repair to the headstock when the neck got broke on stage. I just kinda like little tidbits like these.

Oh okay just wondering it if had anything to do with Joey Ramone or not. I know that he died listening to U2 but just wanted to know if there was a connection with his birthday or something.
