Changed Video Description:
Late last year it was confirmed that the Code Geass franchise would continue across various media, including more manga and anime. Of course there was plenty of excitement from the large Code Geass fanbase, but real details on the new anime have been scarce -- non-existant, even -- until now. A trailer including some brief details on the new anime is included on the BD/DVD of the Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: Kiseki no Birthday stage event, which was released in Japan yesterday. I haven't been able to watch the trailer yet (UPDATED: check out the trailer below!), but information is starting to stream out regardless. Click through for my compilation of the details and my thoughts on what we know about this new project. That date -- a.t.b. 2017 -- places Boukoku no Akito in the timeline during the first season of Lelouch of the Rebellion, and it sounds like the story will follow a squad of Japanese (Area 11 in Britannian terms) Knightmare Frame pilots on some sort of suicide mission on the European front. Beyond that basic premise, it doesn't seem like this first trailer gives too much away. In any case, it looks like we'll be seeing a new cast of characters and some new locations so Boukoku no Akito certainly has the potential to bring plenty of fresh material to the Code Geass franchise.
The trailer also gives us the names of some of the staff involved: Akira Yasuda returns for mech designs, CLAMP will once again be handling character designs, Takahiro Kimura seems to be returning as animation director and the key figures from production of the first two seasons -- director Gorō Taniguchi and writer Ichirō Ōkouchi -- will also be involved, though perhaps not in the same capacity. Boukoku no Akito will be directed by Kazuki Akane (Vision of Escaflowne, Noein) and Shigeru Morita (Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, Blood+) will be writing the scripts.
My thoughts on this reveal are below the gallery. Be warned that what follows contains spoilers for the first two series of Code Geass, so if you haven't seen it yet you might want to stop reading (also: Go. Watch. Now!).When I first heard that there was going to be a new Code Geass anime, I was a bit apprehensive. I am a huge fan of both seasons of Lelouch of the Rebellion, which you might expect would mean I would be excited by such news -- and I was -- but as a fan I also felt that the ending of R2 was both satisfying and very complete. Lelouch had sacrificed himself -- both emotionally and literally -- for the greater good and finally brought peace to the world (or at least, the relevant majority of it). While others threw around comments like, "I hope they bring Lelouch back!" I was hoping the exact opposite. While it is hinted right at the last minute that Lelouch may have survived in some capacity, I think that bringing him back would take away from R2's powerful finale. Lelouch's sacrifice was the perfect end to his character development throughout the series, and it's probably best for it to remain as such.
Perhaps with that in mind you can understand how this announcement of Boukoku no Akito came as a relief. Lelouch's sacrifice and the peace that he finally succeeded in creating are safe (at least for now). Of course there's a chance that this new anime will fail to live up to fan expectations, but at the very least it shouldn't mess too much with what we already have. I'd be very surprised if Lelouch didn't make at least a small appearance in the new project and we'll probably see some familiar Britannian royalty on the European front, but I assume we'll be mostly seeing a new cast of characters in Boukoku no Akito. As much as I love the characters we already know -- and perhaps because of that -- I can certainly appreciate the prospect of meeting some new ones.
That apprehension I was feeling is starting to dissipate as my primary concerns about how a new Code Geass anime would be handled are put to rest. It seems that the wheels are really in motion now, and I'm looking forward to learning more about Boukoku no Akito and, of course, it's as-yet-undated release. What do you think of the concept for this new anime? Share your thoughts and speculation in the comments!
@Darkownage2 Explain how in his last moments he gave Nunally some of his memories, a power reserved to bearers of a Code which also grants immortality.
