Scottish Psalter Psalm 130

A Song of Ascents, Out of the depths, De profundis

Tune: Martyrdom

The book of Psalms provides God's people throughout the ages with the most magnificent sonnets of praise and thanksgiving befitting the God Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and Earth. On the other hand, as a balm for the weary, it plumbs the depths of human emotion and provides the truly penitent with some of the deepest expressions of sorrow and grief.

The lyrics of this psalms was written by a Mr. Francis Rouse. This was presented to the Westminster Assembly and, after careful study and amendments by the three committees over a period of two months, was approved by the Assembly for use in public worship on 14 November 1645 (see Minutes, pp. 131, 163).

After this, it was subjected to six years of scrutiny and revision by two different groups of highly learned and devout leaders of the Scottish Presbyterian Church. Literally, every word and phrase was carefully weighed for faithfulness to the original Hebrew texts.

"... that which St. Augustine has said is true, that no one is able to sing things worthy of God except that which he has received from him. Therefore, when we have looked thoroughly, and search here and there, we shall not find better songs nor more fitting for the purpose, than the Psalms of David, which the Holy Spirit spoke and made through him. And moreover, when we sing them, we are certain that God puts in our mouths these, as if himself were singing in us to exalt his glory" - John Calvin

更夫等候天亮;

我心等候上主,胜过
更夫等候天亮。
7以色列啊!你要仰望,
要仰望耶和华,

因为耶和华有慈爱,
也有丰盛救恩。
8上主必救赎以色列,
脱离一切罪孽。

  • "Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity..." Titus 2:13

  • Lets please do away with all electrical and artificial music and pop-toned gospel in Church.

Nothing in the whole wide world can beat this and the Psalms are directly derived from the Word of the LORD.

  • Psalm singing is the best, i think it's such a shame we have moved away from what the bible has to offer us in sining to modern muci in church! The psalms are full of encouragement! Thanks

  • We can appreciate this great tradition without apology. I used to worship in the Free Church of Scotland. But there is no need for vitriol on other expressions. It hurts the message of the Free Church. Blessings!

  • The pope is the Antichrist and man of sin. Christ does not have a dual nature but two distinct and entire natures in one person for ever.

  • @rupke99 ... pardon me, Rupke, but I don't understand how you can contend that it was not the Church established by Christ who introduced Him to the world. Where was Martin Luther when Peter was being martired? Where was Calvin when Paul was executed? Where were all the various heretics who did not want to believe in Christ's dual nature when the first Christians were being devoured for sport? Oh, please, let it go!!! Your beef with Saints & the Blessed Mother is just 2 sad for words.

  • @fiorella1021 I'm sorry that you are so miss lead. The catholic Church did not introduce Christ to the world, they would rather have you pray to his mother Mary, who is only a human being such as we are and all these other saints that they have you pray to are also just human. You can pray directily to Christ. Please read your new testament. The Catholic Church tried to burn all religious books years ago that Martin Luther wrote who was also a priest but realized the errors in the church.

  • @TheLordAwaked ... as far as I know, the Pope is Christian too... and were it not for the Catholic Church, of which he is the temporal head (Jesus Christ is THE head of the Catholic Church, the Pope is His representative on earth), neither Christ nor His message would have been known.

  • Where is the recording from?

  • Thank you for posting these! I love the Psalms, it is very hard to find a good rendition on youtube. Please keep posting!

  • Beautiful! Thank you so much for posting this. I am an FP.

I wonder what the same choir would sound like singing it a Capella.

How encouraging to read here below of believers in France and CH that love to sing Psalms.

  • Thank you for posting this. I often wonder why we have allowed our tradition to be written out of the church they way it has. Beautiful!!

  • Outstanding
