A variety of things, mostly Reptomin and Tetra Pond Sticks, but sometimes cut-up pieces of chicken and fish. The also got various pieces of plant material, such as water celery.
That is up to nature. They have a better chance being a year old and a little bigger. They certainly have a better chance than they had when they were dug up by raccoons when they were just eggs.
No. Snappers get big fast and I think my painted turtles and RES value their heads, feet and tails. I also value my grandkids' toes and fingers (and mine). Besides, the whole idea was to save disturbed eggs to get as many as possible back to the wild. Snappers also spend a lot of time on the bottom -- not really all that interesting. Painteds are forever active.
